A Thanksgiving Story of Crooked Lines and Warm Furnaces
Exactly one year ago, I hit rock bottom: unemployed, all my IT friends had ghosted me, and I was feeling downright stupid not knowing what on earth came next. Fortunately, not in Greenland.
But professionally? I was at the end of my rope. Late 50s in tech is… let’s say it’s not the VIP section.
Word to the wise, you youtful (did you say “youtful”?) IT folks: have a Plan B locked and loaded.
January 2025 I finally chased the one passion that still lit me up: the RV life. I enrolled in the National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) in Athens, Texas. Eight intense weeks of hands-on training (absorption refrigerators, rooftop A/Cs, water heaters, propane furnaces, hydraulic leveling & slide-outs, chassis construction, and more control-board wizardry than my old IT brain ever wanted to see again). I walked out certified, caffeinated, and kicking myself for not doing it twenty years sooner.
Every Service Call
Since then I’ve been a full-time mobile RV technician, using everything I learned at NRVTA plus decades of IT problem-solving and my own years as an RVer.
This Thanksgiving, I’m Flat-Out Grateful
I’m stunned how every layoff, dead-end, and “what now?” panic attack somehow lined up to drop me exactly where I belong: elbow-deep in an RV furnace, tools scattered everywhere, watching a customer’s face light up because their coach will stay toasty when overnight lows hit the 20s.
Grateful to every customer who took a chance on the new guy with fresh credentials and an old toolbox.
Grateful for the steady stream of calls, texts, referrals, and the pure joy of hearing heat kick on or an A/C finally blow cold.
Most of all, grateful to God Almighty—who, in ways I’ll never fully grasp, keeps drawing perfectly straight with the crookedest lines I’ve ever scribbled. He took a scared, laid-off, late-50s tech dude and turned him into someone who gets to hand warmth and comfort to folks living their dream on the road.
That’s not just a second career.
That’s a straight-up gift.
Happy Thanksgiving, y’all. Stay warm out there.
